Self-study – Smarter German

Self-study – Smarter German —  OPEN vhb: Virtuelle Hochschule Bayern

What is smart? - Being able to successfully transfer existing skills to new challenges - that is SMART!
After English and French, German is one of the most widely spoken languages in Europe. You can communicate well with German not only in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, but also in numerous other regions of the world. If you already have some knowledge of English, this free online course will allow you to build on your existing knowledge and learn German more easily as a second foreign language.

With English, you have already experienced how language learning works. English and German both belong to the Indo-European language family and share many similarities in both vocabulary and grammar. This linguistic affinity is your great advantage: it helps you to acquire German as a second foreign language more easily and quickly. The free online German course therefore makes targeted use of your existing English skills, while the focus of learning is on the receptive skills.

This German course is based on level A1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Level A1 courses include the following language skills:

  • Understanding and using simple sentences aimed at satisfying concrete needs.
  • The ability to understand and use familiar and everyday expressions.
  • The ability to introduce yourself to others and to ask them questions about themselves.
  • Understanding speech when interlocutors express themselves in simple terms, speak slowly and clearly, and are willing to provide assistance when necessary.

Course Description

What can you learn in this course?

You learn how to use your knowledge in English to start with German quickly and efficiently. Furthermore, you learn strategies and skills to learn a new language by using your knowledge about languages and language learning.

The online course is divided into four chapters, each with several lessons, all suitable for beginners with English skills. Based on similarities and differences between the English and German languages, you will first learn the most common vocabulary and basic grammatical structures of German. This is followed by an understanding of different types of text - from short texts to newspaper articles and Internet texts to longer text passages. The last chapter focuses on practical everyday situations related to traveling, eating and studying.

Introductory videos to the individual chapters explain, among other things, the historical background of language development and show parallels between the English and German languages. Varied exercises show you how successfully you can transfer the knowledge you have acquired in English to your second foreign language, German. Printable handouts help you to further consolidate what you have learned.

Target Group

A1 learner of German as a foreign language who have learned English as a foreign language before or who are English native speakers.
